A Walk Through The Garden, 2008

previous rose ------- next rose

Rosa wichurana variegata

Sport of R.wichurana (Eastern Asia)

What a time I had with this rose last year! She definitely didn't like her spot in the easternmost rosebed, and refused to grow at all there. So I dug her up and put her in a pot, and put the pot on the front porch, where she would be shaded during the hottest part of the day. Well, she sulked about that too, for two months. Then she began growing!

Then she stopped.

I gave up. I put her in the garden, where she would be shaded between two ramblers. She didn't grow anymore last year, but this year she seems to be taking up growing with new enthusiasm, so I have hope for her yet.

She makes tiny little leaves, this little princess. Some are all green, some are striped with white, and some are spotted. Before the leaves mature, they can be pink, red, orange or yellow; she always looks like she needs fertilizer, but apparently this is not the case.
